What is a Displaced Homemaker?

A displaced homemaker is defined as:  “an adult who has worked primarily without remuneration to care for the home and family and, for that reason, has diminished marketable skills, or is unemployed or underemployed and experiencing difficulty in obtaining or upgrading employment.”

There are usually women who have lost their husband’s financial support through disability, divorce, domestic violence or death.  Eligible men may also receive services through this program.

In order to be eligible to apply for funds, agencies serving this population must meet eligibility criteria and certify that they will provide the stipulated displaced homemaker services.

What are the Survival Skills Programs?

Each Survival Skills Program consists of a workshop series that develops competencies in ten critical life management and job preparedness areas.  A trained facilitator delivers the curriculum and the training process is interactive.   The programs help participants gain greater control over their lives and future by teaching the practical application of specific skills, instilling confidence and self-esteem, and promoting peer support.
