Children are the major key in breaking the generational cycles of domestic violence. Early intervention and family counseling can break the cycle. The Family Violence Program, Inc. is designed to help “at risk” children from domestic violence homes to cope with their environment dealing with feelings of frustration and anger in a positive, non-violent way.

The Services We Provide

  • Orientation for children entering the safe house in order to reduce trauma and facilitate adjustment.

  • School and community education on family violence and conflict resolution.

  • Summer camp for all children dealing with domestic violence in the    home.

  • Assessments and individual counseling for children and their families.

  • Children’s therapeutic group that targets areas of domestic violence, self-esteem, and the varying emotions children experience in abusive homes.

  • Children’s group during parent support group/counseling times.

  • Nurturing program consisting of 12-week sessions.

  • Parenting skills class consisting of 6-week sessions

  • Friendly, supportive, positive atmosphere.

  • Information and referrals

Effects Of Domestic Violence On Children

  • Children in violent homes are 1500% more likely than the national average to be abused or neglected.

  • Almost 90% of children are aware of violence directed at their mother.

  • 3.5 billion children are at risk of exposure to parental violence yearly.

  • Children from violent homes have higher risks of alcohol/drug abuse and juvenile delinquency.

  • Domestic violence is the #1 cause of homelessness among children.

  • Children learn from example that violence is the only method of conflict resolution.

  • Children learn to accept violence as “normal” thus repeating the cycle in following generations.
